The Brittany Spaniel is a French breed of Spaniel, although in the breeding of this great dog many English Gundogs were crossed with French Spaniels to create what we know today as the Brittany Spaniel. As with most Spaniels they were bred as a working dog and are very capable of hunting, pointing and retrieving, although unlike true Spaniels it does not flush its game. They have a huge amount of stamina and they work hard and fearlessly.
Due to their energetic and highly trainable nature the Brittany Spaniel excels at canine sports such as agility and flyball, and they are also very good at tracking which helps to occupy both their physical and mental exercise needs. Like most working spaniels Britannys love the water and will generally take any opportunity to jump in, regardless of the weather.
An alert, eager to please, hard working dog who thrives on human company and having a job to do. Like most working Spaniels they are very energetic and need plenty of exercise, but can make great family pets so long as they are not allowed to get bored. They are not well suited to being left alone for long periods and can develop separation anxiety as they love to be with their humans.
They have a kind nature and are very sociable, generally being good around other dogs and children. They do have a high prey drive so it is best to introduce them to any small pets at a very young age so as to minimise the chance of them hunting any other family pets as they grow older. They need good recall training from a very young age as they are likely to chase anything they see if they are not well trained.
The Brittany Spaniel has a dense coat which can be either flat or wavy, with feather on legs. They come in a variety of colours such as white, liver and white, black and white roan, orange and white, orange and white roan, tricolour, liver tricolour or black tricolour. They can have a bob tail or even be tailless.
