The Welsh Springer Spaniel is similar to the English Springer Spaniel and it is often confused as such. Its coat is straight and flat and only comes in one colour which is white with red markings, and any of the white areas may have red ticking. The red colour is not seen in English Springers. They usually have brown eyes although yellow eyes are not uncommon.
They are very affectionate dogs and are very loyal to their family, they do not tolerate being left for long periods well and do better in an active, outdoorsy household where they can go out with their humans for plenty of exercise and mental stimulation or one where someone is at home most of the time. They are generally good with children and other pets.
The Welsh Springer Spaniel was bred as a hunting dog, they are energetic, with great stamina and work hard when trained well. Due to their intelligence, and trainability they can excel at canine sports such as agility, flyball, obedience and field trials. Unlike their English cousins there are no separate working and show types of these dogs. They are generally slightly smaller than the English Springer Spaniel.
